Monterrey [Mexico], April 1 (ANI): Iraq booked their place at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after edging past Bolivia 2-1 in a decisive intercontinental playoff, marking their return to football's biggest stage after nearly four decades.
According to ESPN, the Asian side produced a composed performance at Estadio BBVA on Tuesday to claim the final available spot in the expanded 48-team tournament. Iraq last featured at the World Cup in 1986, and their qualification ends a long wait for the 'Lions of Mesopotamia.'
Iraq made a strong start, taking the lead early in the first half when forward Ali Al-Hamadi found the net with a well-timed header from a set-piece delivery. Bolivia responded before the break, as Moises Paniagua capitalised on an attacking move to level the score and keep their hopes alive.
However, Iraq regained control soon after the restart. Substitute Marko Farji made an immediate impact by setting up Aymen Hussein, who calmly converted in the 53rd minute to restore the lead. From there, Iraq's disciplined defensive structure frustrated Bolivia, which struggled to break through despite pushing forward with long-range attempts and aerial balls into the box.
The victory ensures Iraq's inclusion in Group I, where they will face strong opposition in France, Norway and Senegal. Their campaign is set to begin against Norway on June 16, followed by fixtures against France on June 22 and Senegal on June 26.
Under the guidance of head coach Graham Arnold, Iraq has shown resilience throughout their qualification journey, overcoming late logistical hurdles to secure a memorable triumph.
Bolivia, who had reached the playoff after defeating Suriname, fell short in their bid to return to the World Cup, with their last appearance remaining a distant milestone. (ANI)
