New Delhi [India], April 2 (ANI): India has reiterated its commitment to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations, emphasising the crucial role its troops play in maintaining global peace and security. Addressing a media briefing in the national capital, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted India's contribution to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), where approximately 600 Indian troops are currently deployed.
'Our troops under the aegis of UN-mandated peacekeeping missions have made a significant contribution to global peace and security,' the MEA stated, underlining India's long-standing role as one of the largest and longest-serving contributors to UN peacekeeping missions worldwide.
The statement came in the wake of recent attacks on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon, which have led to casualties among the Blue Helmets. Expressing solidarity with the victims, the MEA said, 'We condemn the recent attacks on UN Peacekeepers deployed in UNIFIL, and pay our homage to the fallen Blue Helmets. We urge all parties to ensure the inviolability of the UN mission and the safety and security of the Peacekeepers.'
India emphasised the need for accountability in line with international law and United Nations Security Council (UNSC) mandates. 'As one of the largest and longest serving contributors to Peacekeeping, and in consonance with UNSC resolution 2589, we seek accountability for crimes against peacekeepers,' the briefing added, highlighting India's call for justice and protection for personnel serving under UN flags.
The MEA also reiterated the importance of multilateral cooperation in conflict zones and stressed that attacks on peacekeepers undermine global efforts to maintain stability. Indian forces have a long history of participation in UN missions, contributing to operations in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, and have consistently been recognised for professionalism, discipline, and dedication to humanitarian objectives.
India's continued engagement with UNIFIL reflects its broader foreign policy approach that champions peace, security, and adherence to international norms. The MEA underscored that ensuring the safety of peacekeepers is not only a legal obligation for parties involved but also a moral imperative that sustains the credibility of UN peacekeeping efforts.
The Indian government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting UN peacekeeping operations and maintaining a robust presence in areas of conflict, while calling upon all stakeholders to uphold the sanctity of the mission and protect the lives of those serving under the UN banner. (ANI)
