JERUSALEM/TEHRAN, June 24 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump announced Monday evening that Israel and Iran have reached a formal agreement to implement a complete and total ceasefire. Both countries confirmed the truce on Tuesday.
The following timeline traces key events since Israel launched a preemptive strike on June 13:
-- June 13: Israel launched sustained airstrikes on multiple Iranian sites, including nuclear and military facilities.
Top military figures, including Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Bagheri and Chief Commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Hossein Salami, and prominent nuclear scientists were reportedly killed.
Nearly 100 missiles were launched from Iran toward central and northern Israel in two massive barrages, causing significant damage and injuring 41 people.
-- June 14: Israel carried out attacks on a number of Iran's western and northwestern cities. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had killed nine senior Iranian nuclear scientists and experts.
Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi said the sixth round of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran, scheduled for Sunday, "will not take place."
Trump said he had a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, and both of them agreed that "this war in Israel-Iran should end."
-- June 15: The Israeli air force unleashed a new wave of airstrikes in Iran, targeting surface-to-surface missile sites in the west of the country.
Iran's IRGC has confirmed that eight other senior commanders of its aerospace division were killed in Israel's airstrikes on the capital Tehran.
Trump said that while the United States is not currently involved in Israel's military strikes against Iran, future involvement remains a possibility.
-- June 16: Iran's state broadcaster IRIB said one of its buildings was hit in a "brutal aggression" by Israel. The head of IRGC intelligence organization Mohammad Kazemi, and his deputy Hassan Mohaghegh, were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Tehran.
Israel's largest oil refinery company Bazan announced that all of its facilities at the Haifa Port had been completely shut down due to the damage caused by an Iranian missile strike.
-- June 17: The IRGC carried out strikes on "key Israeli intelligence sites" in Tel Aviv, including military intelligence and Mossad facilities.
Israeli military announced that it had eliminated Iran's top military commander Ali Shadmani.
Trump posted on social media platform, urging an "unconditional surrender" by Iran.
-- June 18: Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei warned that any American military intervention would cause "irreparable damage."
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Israeli Air Force fighter jets had destroyed "the headquarters of Iran's internal security forces."
-- June 19: Iranian state television said Iran's Arak heavy water facility was attacked by Israel, while Iran's strike in southern Israel targeted military intelligence facilities.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a briefing that Trump will make a decision on whether he will order a strike against Iran in the next two weeks.
-- June 20: Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany, as well as the European Union's top diplomat held talks. Araghchi reiterated that Iran's nuclear program remains fully under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said that recent Israeli airstrikes on Iran have delayed Tehran's ability to develop nuclear weapons by at least two to three years.
-- June 21: Israel conducted airstrikes on central Iranian city of Isfahan, home to a key nuclear research center.
-- June 22: Trump said Saturday (Washington time) on Truth Social that the United States has completed attack on three nuclear sites in Iran, including "Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan."
Trump said Iran's key nuclear facilities had been "completely and totally obliterated," and that future attacks will be "far greater and a lot easier."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the U.S. attack a "bold decision to target Iran's nuclear facilities."
Araghchi said in a press conference that the U.S. attack on Iran is an outrageous, grave and unprecedented violation of fundamental principles of the Charter of the UN and international law. He said that Tehran "reserves all options" to retaliate.
Iranian deputy foreign minister reportedly said Iran will continue uranium enrichment.
Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said the fresh wave of attacks targeted Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv and a biological research center, among others.
-- June 23: Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Araghchi. Putin said the unprovoked aggression against Iran has no basis or justification.
Qatar's air defense systems intercepted multiple missiles over the capital Doha after Iran launched a military operation targeting U.S. forces stationed at Al Udeid Air Base.
Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf said the legislature is moving to approve a plan to suspend Tehran's cooperation with the United Nations nuclear watchdog, as tensions intensify with the United States and Israel.
-- June 24: Trump announced Monday evening (Washington time) on his Truth Social platform that Israel and Iran have reached a formal agreement to implement a complete and total ceasefire, marking what he called the end of the "12-Day War."
Trump said the ceasefire will initially last 12 hours, during which the opposing sides will maintain a posture of "peace and respect."
Iran's Press TV said that ceasefire begins following waves of Iranian attacks on Israel.
Netanyahu said Israel accepts a ceasefire proposed by Trump and has achieved its war goals against Iran.
Later, Trump told Israel "do not drop those bombs" on Iran, saying that this would be a "major violation" of the ceasefire.
Iran's Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarghandi the death toll from Israeli strikes across Iran over the past 12 days has reached 606, with 5,332 others injured.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced the "end of the 12-day war" and urged all government bodies and revolutionary institutions to focus all their efforts on reconstruction.
