Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 22 (ANI): Senior Vice President of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party, Ghulam Hassan Mir, on Sunday expressed deep concern over the United States' recent strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, describing the development as a blow to international efforts toward peace and mediation.
The Jammu Kashmir leader emphasised the need for world leaders to rise and act for peace with many countries possessing nuclear weapons.
Speaking to ANI, Mir said, 'When the United Nations Organisation was formed, world leaders envisioned it as a forum for peace-building and resolving disputes. Today, that idea seems ineffective.'
Referring to the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran, Mir criticised US President Donald Trump and Washington's evolving role in the region.
'There was once a belief that America, especially under Trump, would help de-escalate the situation and promote peace. But instead, it has become an active participant in the conflict, which is unfortunate,' he remarked.
Mir emphasised the urgency of collective action by global powers to prevent further deterioration of the geopolitical climate, especially as more nations become nuclear-capable.
'World leaders must rise and work to act for peace. The stakes are higher now than ever, with many countries possessing nuclear weapons,' he warned.
Meanwhile, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the success of the operation launched by the US in Iran.
In a media briefing with Chairperson of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Air Force General Dan Caine, Hegseth said that the US had successfully conducted precision strikes in Iran's Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz.
Hegseth said that Trump has been warning Iran for over a decade against procuring a nuclear weapon, and now its ambitions have been obliterated.
He said that US President's operation was bold and no other military could have conducted this operation.
US on Sunday launched strikes on three underground nuclear facilities in Iran. Speaking from the White House, US President Donald Trump announced that America carried out 'massive precision' strikes on Iran and warned the latter of further retaliation if peace was not achieved.
Iran condemned the attacks, calling them a violation of international law and vowed to continue its nuclear programme. (ANI)
